This is the story of Jeffery Lionel Magee, or Maniac Magee, a homeless orphan that roams the streets of a Pennsylvania town. A local legend, maniac is known for a variety of quirks—most notably his willingness to befriend people from other parts of town. The story gives you a front seat on the adventures of maniac to find a home—first with a white family, to the buffalo pen at the zoo, and to the home of his greatest nemesis. He always manages to find his way to notoriety bringing many laughs to the reader. It also tackles issues of racism, cultural difference, and the sense of belonging. Though written for kids, this is a great read for all ages.
