Book Signing with Linda Macfarlane

Off the Beaten Path welcomes Linda MacFarlane, author of Amicus Curiae: Friend of the Court. Linda will be available to sign copies of her book and meet with you.

About the Book: Amicus Curiae, legal Latin for “friend of the court.” Linda MacFarlane, as an official reporter, was a friend of the court. Not a party to the cases that crawled through the courtrooms where she spent her career, but a technician who took a verbatim record and provided transcripts to the higher courts of appeal. Like most shorthand reporters, Linda is a keen observer. Amicus Curiae is a compilation of stories from her experiences while working in the Federal system in both San Francisco and Oakland, and the Superior Courts of Contra Costa County. She thought court would be permanently adjourned when she retired; however, the cases continued to whisper coldly in her mind. Amicus Curiae offers an insider’s view of courtroom nuances and stark realities. It is Linda’s effort to make peace with the voices of her career. You may smile at some of these stories. You may resonate with others. A few will, doubtless, leave you horrified by the depths of depravity to which mankind can plummet.

About the Author: Linda MacFarlane has always loved words. She was an English Literature major at Sacramento State College before attending the Academy of Stenographic Arts and Trinity College in San Francisco. She was proud to be issued Certified Shorthand Reporter’s license #7813. The majority of her reporting career was in criminal, but Linda has also worked in bankruptcy, juvenile, family law and civil. She served as Chief Court Reporter, and managed 42 reporters in both Municipal and Superior Courts. Linda has written poetry, short stories and ditty lyrics, but Amicus Curiae is her foray into publishing. She has also written a children’s book about tolerance, Alternate Universe. Retired since 2009, Linda splits her time between golfing in California and fishing in Florida. Her three grandsons are the lights of her life.
