I was enchanted with this book after reading the first two sentences, "Mabel had known there would be silence. That was the point after all."

This hauntingly beautiful story wraps around a couple, Mabel and Jack, who were fated to be without child, heading to Alaska to escape their past lives and start anew. Homesteading in Alaska brings its own share of challenges physically and emotionally. From the isolation to the backbreaking work of trying to live off the land, the couple becomes more isolated from each other than before.

When the first snows fall, they build a snow child. In the morning the child is gone. Piecing together a fairy tale from childhood, Mabel knows the fate of their future before it unfolds. The child, real or imagined, binds the couple together and sprinkles a spell of love and hope that bring Jack and Mabel through season after season in the harsh Alaskan wilderness.

The characters of this world combined with the realities of living with bare basics, makes the reader long for simpler times, where maybe fairy tales can come true, where nothing is impossible and where dreams can flourish.

Synopsis of this suspenseful story:

He placed a notice in a Chicago paper, an advertisement for "a reliable wife." She responded, saying that she was "a simple, honest woman." She was, of course, anything but honest, and the only simple thing about her was her single-minded determination to marry this man and then kill him, slowly and carefully, leaving her a wealthy widow, able to take care of the one she truly loved.

What Catherine Land did not realize was that the enigmatic and lonely Ralph Truitt had a plan of his own. And what neither anticipated was that they would fall so completely in love.

Filled with unforgettable characters, and shimmering with color and atmosphere, A Reliable Wife is an enthralling tale of love and madness, of longing and murder.
