The Written Word Meets Music: Writing Competition

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra and Off the Beaten Path invite creative writers to submit poetry or prose inspired by SSO's selected March music program. Listen to the musical selection assigned to your age group, read the brief narrative behind the piece and then let your creativity flow. Weave your story into the music of the SSO’s March concert.

Winning submissions will be read at the Symphony Orchestra concerts on March 19th and 20th and will be featured on the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra and Off the Beaten Path websites. Winners will also receive 2 tickets to attend the concert.

Competition Guidelines: 

•  300 to 500 words
•  poetry or prose  (fairy tales, fantasy, adventure... be creative!)
• ​One winner will be selected from each age group:
  •  11-13 years Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave) - Mendelssohn
  • 14-18 years Scheherazade – Rimsky-Korsakov 
  • 19 + years Cowboys Overture – John Williams or Tzigane – Ravel

Submission Deadline: February 26th , 2016

Submissions will be accepted via email beth@steamboatarts.org or in person at The Depot Art Center located at 1001 13th Street. 

Writing submissions will be juried on March 4th and winners will be announced on March 7th.
