This children’s picture book is full of love, affirmation, acceptance and hope. The words are as beautiful as the illustrations! Although this is written by a mother to her newborn child, I find it the perfect book for parents/grandparents to gift to their “special ones” at any of life’s milestones.

Published: Viking Books for Young Readers - September 6th, 2016

What a cute picture book about two boys who write pen pal letters! The only catch is that the letters have to rhyme, and one boy is human while the other is a dragon! The boys become better friends and exchange letters until they finally get to meet and discover the truth about each other. A series of hilarious and adorable misunderstandings follow the boys’ readings of their letters.

This is such a cute book!  I love that it rhymes and introduces kids to understanding people from different backgrounds than their own!

What is the meaning of fate and how far would you go to change your fate?  This is the story of Natasha, who is trying to not be deported back to Jamaica because of something that her father did. Daniel is trying to be everything that his Korean immigrant parents want him to be but really, he only wants to be a poet. This is their story of how fate enters their lives and affects the people around them. I loved how the author brought all the characters together.

Published: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers - January 10th, 2017

An excellent young adult novel set in a world where those who control fire are the absolute enemies of those who control ice. Ruby, a rare fireblood, is recruited by frostblood rebels to destroy the cruel monarchy, but is captured and forced to fight for her life instead. With a hot temper, unpredictable powers, and a tempestuous frostblood man at her back, Ruby must make it out alive … or the whole world may have to pay the price. Frostblood is a clever and well-paced young adult novel that plays on the popular ‘elemental power’ genre.

Imagine a deep space colonization mission wherein just about everything that could go wrong does. As the story begins, 2,000 humans, none of whom have ever seen Earth, are 170 years into a deep space colonization mission. The objective of which is to form a settlement on one of our nearest Earth analogues, which those onboard the ship affectionately call Aurora.

All told, Aurora is a book that poses some very interesting questions about our future and the possibility of deep space flight. It's a book about space travel that will leave you thankful you're still on Earth.

Published: Atria Books - November 1st, 2016

“Death (for many) is a slow drum.”

This short but powerful story takes the reader into the thoughts of a dear grandpa who is slowly losing his mental faculties. As his grandson and son struggle to support him, they conclude they must overcome their fear of saying their final goodbyes, before it is too late. I began reading this story with curiosity, developed a “lump in my throat” mid-way, and finished with full-fledged sobbing!

I can’t believe it took me so long to discover this novel! Set in 1920s Kenya, it’s a beautiful fictionalization of a real woman’s biography, and a perfect read for anyone whose dreams are equally full of adventures and uncertainty. It’s perfect for those of us unfulfilled by the standard 9-5 life. I feel as if I found part of myself in Beryl Markham, and I gained a bit more wildness as she introduced herself to me page by page. Markham is a powerhouse in her ambition and her defeats, her happiness and her brokenheartedness. Likewise, this is a powerhouse of a novel.

This is a new look at Victoria through her own letters. Julia Baird has done a wonderful job of bringing the queen to life in this in-depth story of her life. Victoria was so much more complex than how she has been portrayed in the past.  I love reading about strong women in history and I loved this book.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9780399588174
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Spiegel & Grau - November 15th, 2016

Trevor Noah, host of the The Daily Show, has written a compelling memoir and cultural study about growing up in Apartheid and post-Apartheid South Africa. Noah was “born a crime” because his Xhosa mother had conceived a child with a white Swiss-German man, which was illegal at the time.  If ever there was motivation to listen to an audiobook: this is it.  Read by the charming author, it is compelling and funny and you won’t want to stop listening.
