Elanna grew up in a court far from her home under a king that is not her father, but is raised like a daughter.  The night that she was taken has haunted her her whole life.  It seems that things are falling apart, as she is accused of murdering the king.  But this is just the beginning to bring Elanna back to her true heritage, and it explains why she has this unwelcome power to make things grow.  As she learns about her past, it brings up questions about where her future should go and if she should choose the magic that is growing inside her or be forced to choose people she loves. Also available in eBook.

If you’ve read David Sedaris’ other works, then by all means read this book.  It is journal entries of his from the years 1977  through 2002.  It isn’t his normal writing that you know and love; rather, it’s personal, and shows his growth, both as a human being and as a writer.  You can tell when he’s doing drugs (in fact he often tells you), and when he’s drinking.  As time goes on, you find him talking about his bad habits, and that he wants to quit - then another entry will say “I’ll never do THAT again”.  You’re able to find out who the man is - who he was as a very young man and his aspirations and how he evolves.  If you HAVEN’T read Sedaris, my first inclination is go read everything of his you can find - THEN read this.  He’s funny, poignant, a flawed human being, and  an angel.  Welcome to his world; it’s a great one. Also available in eBook and audiobook.

Claire Messud clearly remembers being best, BEST friends with someone when in her early school years.  This story of two girls from different backgrounds, joined at the hip when they were in nursery school until middle school, is evocative of myself and my own best friend. We diverged, as do the characters in this well-delineated story.  We love both Julia (Juju) and Cassie, the girl with the white “burning” hair, but know that the closeness they feel, in particular one summer, is inevitably going to come to a close. Their sense of one another, however, lasts eternally. Also available in eBook and audiobook.

Published: Knopf Publishing Group - April 4th, 2017

“This isn’t a story about war. It’s about ruin.”

The Second American Civil War began in 2074. By this time, the sea had risen so high that Florida and the entire eastern seaboard were no more. The southwest had long ago burned and the US capital had been relocated to Columbus. But this book isn’t really about climate change or the battles of the war. It’s about the life of Sara T. Chestnut, who grew up in the South during the war. As she is stripped of her home, her family, and her identity, American War explores the terrible cost of conflict and inaction, and their ability to drive people to commit horrible acts. As moving as it is well-written, this is a book that stays with you. Available as both eBook and audiobook.

“Part Kafka, part The Big Lebowski.” This is an absolute masterpiece of historical fiction. I was genuinely stunned to find that this is Goldberg’s debut novel. The setting is Moscow, 1953. The plans for Stalin’s final epic attack on the Jewish population are in full swing, bringing arrests and executions by the millions. Enter a crazy old war veteran turned actor, who sets into motion a series of events as violent and deadly as they are philosophical and hysterical. This book has some of the most unique writing techniques I have seen, reading like a literary psychological vaudevillian horror show, and is a perfect blend of comedy and tragedy. The Yid is simply brilliant. Available in both eBook and audiobook.

Dylan wrote this book at the age of twenty-three, during the mid-60s, the most monumental time of his career. This collection of experimental prose poetry is beautifully and stunningly written in the way that only Bob Dylan is capable of doing. His lyrical stream of conscious rhetoric is reminiscent of the raw and expressive Beat Generation, carrying the same weight of protest and revolution found in Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, and the like. Any fan of Dylan should experience this book. Available in eBook.

In a world that is changing pace quicker than most of us feel like we can keep up with it, Senator Ben Sasse asks an important question: when did America forget  to teach our kids the art of self-reliance? This is not a book focused on complaining about the latest generation’s quirks - it’s about our cultural conscience as Americans, built around hard work and determination, how lack of resilience and direction affects not only quality of life but also the larger economy and culture, and how rejecting a lifestyle of leisure and ease actually creates better prepared, thoughtful, and engaged adults. Speaking from his personal life and experiences, Sasse lays out a plan for how to encourage confidence, self-reliance, thoughtfulness, and purpose in America’s next generations. An excellent read regardless of whether you’re 19 or 99, parent or child, liberal or conservative. Available in both eBook and audiobook.

The town of Henry, Kansas is not a place where things go, but it is a place where things end up. Henry York is one of those things, sent to live with his rather eccentric family. There are many things unfamiliar to Henry - riding in a truck with no seat belt, playing baseball, owning a knife - but the wall of cupboards in his attic bedroom is just bizarre. Henry and his cousin quickly set out to discover how the cupboards work, setting in motion an unpredictable chain of events and uncovering secrets which, perhaps, ought to have stayed buried.

Wilson is a masterful storyteller, seamlessly tying together the magic of rural Kansas with the magic of other worlds in a way that will make you nostalgic for both.

I love Frog on a Log?! This is marvelous book to read aloud.  Cat and Frog have to talk about all the different types of animals and what they will sit on. Frog are to sit on logs, but Frog doesn’t like that.  Here is a small sample;  “Goats sit on coats, cows sit on plows, storks sit on forks.”  How fun is that!

A child’s pet goldfish finds himself upside-down, rather see-through, and in search of some company. He floats about town in search of a friend, but finds the selection rather lackluster - that is, until, he bumps right into someone interesting. Snicket has an important message for all ages - when good company is hard to find, just keep floating.
