If Kafka had been a happier person and had lived to see the space age, he might have written something like this book. When a mysterious cloud appears in space, Jacob, a young Czech astronaut, is sent out to investigate. Thrust into the spotlight as a national hero, Jakub must grapple with his country’s troubled past, his strained marriage, and his uncertain future. Oh, and he meets a maybe-hallucinatory alien spider named Hanuš, who guides Jakub through the cosmos and his childhood memories.

A book more about love, regret, and the burdens of the past than about space travel or science fiction, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found in this wonderful debut novel.

This is a short tale of a old man who is tasked with the job of returning a young Indian captive back to her family. Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd reads the news in the cities and towns of Texas. He is serious yet very well-read and is immediately compassionate toward Johanna, the young girl who was taken captive by a band of Kiowa raiders. Jiles weaves a beautiful tale of love and friendship between the two as they travel south, always south, toward Johanna’s home.

It took me one 24 hour period to read this book. It was that good. This story follows the life of Meridian Wallace, from childhood to old age. Meridian was a precocious child, particularly for birds. However, her dream of becoming an ornithologist is stunted when she marries an atomic physicist who participates in secret bomb building in New Mexico. Church’s writing is vivid and captivating. Her tale of live and love is one that resonated with me long after reading.

Before you open this book, take a step back and look at the idea of morals. Where they come from, why they’re important, and what makes something wrong or right. In A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess will open your mind to a new perspective that encourages you to act upon your deepest and darkest desires and live your life by what feels right to you. This is an all around, real horrorshow book and I would recommend it to anyone willing to step out of their comfort zone for twenty-one chapters and experience more than just the metaphorical ‘white picket fence.’

I was excited to read this series after watching the movies and feeling a bit disappointed. I love love, and unfortunately the acting in the movies ruined them for me. However, I was recommended by bibliophiles over and over again that I HAD to read the books and boy were they right. These books are so much better than the movies (as is the case most of the time.) If you enjoyed the movies at all read these, if you love romance, read these, if you love vampy teenage angst..read these. They did not disappoint like the movies.

Also available as an Audiobook and an E-book.  If you like this series you may also enjoy the Divergent Series.

They now reside in what is left of  Bavarian castle that used to be one of the pinnacles of  high German society. They have to come to terms with what all the Allied Forces are bringing to light about the Nazi party and what it means to be German. Children in India often become victims of their traditions, especially prevalent in the poorer sections of the Indian society. Set mainly in Mumbai, this story explores the destiny of two girls in India from different backgrounds who come together and form a bond that is lifelong. At the age of 8, Mukta is dedicated as a temple prostitute, while Tara lives a wealthy life. Throughout this gripping novel, the author paints a vivid picture of the world of human trafficking. This story is going to haunt me for awhile. If you read Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers, this new book will offer another perspective of Indian life and traditions.

Two brothers and their wives meet for dinner in a Dutch restaurant, to discuss a terrible crime which both sons within each family hold equal responsibility. The story is uncomfortable and although the plot captured my attention, I began to squirm, hoping, for the sake of the characters, for this dinner to  finally be over!! This novel has recently come out on the big screen. I suggest you read the book before you see the movie!

Neil Gaiman has written the Norse myths, repopularized recently by Marvel, and taken them back to their roots. This novel is brilliant because it can be read as a novel, or every chapter can be read as an individual story. Gaiman brings his usual storytelling mastery to every sentence, and as a reader one is transported to Asgard, Jotunheim, and beyond in every breath!  Meet the Norse gods and goddess as they were originally dreamt up in this gorgeous book only sold at independent booksellers.

I am a huge Neil DeGrasse Tyson fan, so when I saw this arrive at Off The Beaten Path I was so excited to read it and it is just as amazing as I had hoped!  If you are familiar with COSMOS the TV show reboot that Tyson hosts you are familiar with the “Celestial Calendar” that he travels along. Well, this book follows the same journey. Tyson takes us on a journey from the very beginning of our universe (January 1st) to the big bang (4 seconds into the calendar) to the formation of the milky way (2 weeks into the celestial calendar) to our present day (December 31st at midnight). Throughout, he breaks down the scientific aspects of life such as photons, quarks and light years, in a way that most cosmophiles or astrophiles could understand. If you’re in a hurry and interested in the cosmos check this book out!

If you enjoy this book you may also enjoy Cosmos and Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan. This is available as both an E-book and an Audiobook read by Tyson himself!
