This book is often quoted as “hard to read, harder to put down.” That is because the subject matter is extremely difficult, but the writing is absolutely beautiful. Turtle is a 14-year-old girl who has been subjected to her father’s emotional, psychological, physical and sexual abuse.  Martin, her father, is complex and not simply evil and her love for her father is heartbreaking.  The setting in northern California Mendocino provides a rich earthy setting that is full of botanic and aquatic symbolism. Somehow this book is at times humorous, suspenseful, devastating, and uplifting.  If you can get past the subject matter, you won’t be able to put this book down and you will never forget Turtle.

“...ultimately, the empathetic gift blurred the boundaries between hunter and victim, between the successful and the defeated.”

As the basis for the cinematic masterpiece Blade Runner, Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a must-read for any sci-fi fan. The book follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter searching for illegal androids hiding on Earth. As his hunt progresses and the danger increases, Deckard must grapple with questions about the nature of consciousness, empathy, and biological vs. mechanical life. Dark, thought-provoking, and wonderfully bizarre, this book presents the fantastic possibilities of sci-fi as only Philip K. Dick can deliver. Also available as ebook and audiobook.

This is the story of three immigrants, from different parts of the world, whose lives become mutually linked because of a crime. Each character knows first hand what it means to be an undocumented immigrant in the US, living in a state of uncertainty.

Allende portrays a powerful explanation of why people would leave their homeland to illegally come into the US. They have nothing to lose. In fact, if they remain in their own country they might lose everything. In addition to losing myself in a great story, I also learned background information about Brazil, Guatemala and Germany.

Elena Richardson is living an idyllic life with her husband and four teenagers in the privileged community of Shaker Heights. She rents one of her “extra” houses to Mia, an unconventional artist and single mother of Pearl, who becomes infatuated with the Richardson teens. Their lifestyles are so different from her own, and Pearl wants to be part of it! Shaker Heights becomes divided when friends of the Richardson’s become enmeshed in a custody battle over a Chinese baby they recently adopted. Mia and Elena support opposite sides of this battle, as the teens flounder with their own beliefs.

This is a well-crafted story that delves deeply into each character, encouraging the reader to contemplate not only the often complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, but also to face the question; What is a mother.  This story, which began with a destructive house fire and ended in the same scene, kept me captivated until the very end. I loved it!

I am madly, deeply in love with every little thing by Neil Gaiman. That being said, Neverwhere is by far my favorite. Richard is a very regular man, a creature of comfort who is well-adapted to his office job, high end apartment, and successful fiancee. But life as he knows it gets flipped upside down when he finds Door, unconscious and bleeding, on a nighttime walk, and together they traverse through the magical and dangerous world of London Below. Reading Gaiman’s books as an adult gives me that same sense of excitement I got while reading Harry Potter as a kid. I consider him the greatest fantasy author of our time, and you will not regret picking up a copy of Neverwhere.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch is a hysterical treasure of a novel, by two of England’s most renowned (and most hilarious) modern fantasy authors. The forces of Good and Evil are preparing for their final stand, as the plans for Armageddon are in full swing. As the world is coming to an end, an angel and a demon ban together to prevent it. I don’t typically go to books for humor, but this book has had me literally laughing out loud at almost every turn of the page. Pratchett and Gaiman have created a brilliant collaboration.

I happened to pick up a Neil Gaiman book as a sort of last resort.  Well, how wrong was I???  I’d been avoiding him for some perverse sub-thought of mine (if everyone else likes him, I’m sure not to). Stardust is a magnificent adult fairy tale; filled with Gaiman’s sense of joy and belief in the unbelievable.  The story has everything from the lowly shop-boy to the princess-in-disguise (well, the Star).  There are witches galore, and the means to do away with them; magic of all sorts - the list goes on.  Eloquent on so many levels; thought-provoking - a lovely story, altogether.

ABC Animals! Cover Image

Published: Workman Publishing - October 4th, 2016

Rufus Seder has taken the most vibrant colors, and associated them with animals and movement.  The “moire” effect, as it’s called, allows movement of the animals without technical aid.  The Alligator, for instance - his jaw opens and closes (amazingly) and he trots along.  The letters are  upper and lower cases, in colors that are SO bright, children just WANT to look at them.  The animals (a few that are a little obscure), walk, trot, hop, fly - whatever it is that they do.  So much fun for ABCers or their younger counterparts.
