WHITNEY'S NEW PICK!

You're thinking, oh great, yet another novel of the Plague...but stop! This is really great! It is a spin off of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales without out all the dry, boring language! A group of travelers form a company and scour the English countryside in search of food, shelter and refuge from the pestilence. Each of them hides a secret and one by one they are revealed. Can you figure out their secrets before someone else does? This is a great, fast paced read that I couldn't put down.

There are classic books that are worthy of reading more than once in a lifetime such as Lord of the Rings, Beloved, Catcher in the Rye, Possession, etc. Little, Big is on that list. This is an epic work of fiction that has such an amazing sense of place filled with details so remarkable I found myself rereading page after page. I have a hardcover copy that I keep near my bed and often pick it up and just start reading at any random place. It is the tale of a family history and the making of a house, filled with magic and wonder. This is not, however, a quick read. It should be savored and poured over and every word fully digested. This will go down as one of the greatest fantasy novels of the 20th century.

This is a fantastic novel about a young man trying to persuade his grandfather to talk about his experiences in Russia during WWII and finally getting him to do it. The story he tells is nothing short of amazing- filled with humor, adventure and raw brutality that comes with war times. The characters are unlikely friends who are forced together in a prison cell and given a second chance at survival if they can complete a nearly impossible task. I am sure that there is some truth in this piece of fiction which makes it all the more intriguing.
