Three hungry soldiers decide to stop in a village on their way back home from the war. They were hoping the people would help them with dinner and a place to stay, but they were not met with such hospitality. The villagers, wary of the strangers, hid all their food and pretended that they had no space for the travelers. It took some creativity, but the soldiers were able to coax the villagers into sharing their scarce ingredients with the soldiers for an elaborate village meal with their story about stone soup with the king. They were then welcomed to stay the night, and all was well. I fondly remember this classic story being read aloud in first grade, illustrating the benefits of sharing and cooperation--a lesson to never be forgotten.
