Rebecca Serle writes in a way that cuts right to the core of me, and every time I read one of her books I’m reminded of the fact.  The Dinner List begins with Sabrina walking into her birthday dinner to find her list sitting at the table.  You know the list? The one with the five people living or dead you would like to have dinner with?  Sabrina’s includes her oldest friend, a favorite professor, the father she never knew, Audrey Hepburn herself, and a tragic love.  From 8 to midnight, wine is drunk and stories are exchanged.  Painful truths are brought to light, and life is revealed in all of its beautiful, funny, painful glory.  You can’t stay the same forever, and dwelling in your pain will not necessarily help you understand it.  Life goes on whether or not you move with it.  Eventually we all have to make a choice.  Also read Serle’s other novel, In Five Years, which rocked my world on its axis.

A Bustle Book Club Selection

I have five words for Rebecca Serles The Dinner List: wistful, delicious, romantic, magical, love.
Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry and Young Jane Young

Weve been waiting for an hour. Thats what Audrey says. She states it with a little bit of an edge, her words just bordering on cursive. Thats the thing I think first. Not: Audrey Hepburn is at my birthday dinner, but Audrey Hepburn is annoyed.

At one point or another, weve all been asked to name five people, living or dead, with whom wed like to have dinner. Why do we choose the people we do? And what if that dinner was to actually happen? These are the questions Rebecca Serle contends with in her utterly captivating novel, The Dinner List, a story imbued with the same delightful magical realism as One Day, and the life-changing romance of Me Before You.

When Sabrina arrives at her thirtieth birthday dinner she finds at the table not just her best friend, but also three significant people from her past, and well, Audrey Hepburn. As the appetizers are served, wine poured, and dinner table conversation begins, it becomes clear that theres a reason these six people have been gathered together.

Praise For…

Imagine that you could gather the people youve loved - dead or alive- at one table, for one night, with a chance to heal yourself once and for all. The Dinner List is a heartbreakingly romantic book framed by such an evening. Its Serles unflinching investigation into the triumph and failings of love that makes this book one of a kind. A touch magic, a touch tragic, and absolutely compelling from beginning to end.
Stephanie Danler, New York Times bestselling author of Sweetbitter
