Staff Reviews

The one hundred days of the Centennial has started. Rulers from each realm meet on the island of Lightlark to try and break their realms' curses. Guided by a prophecy, rules, and alliances the rulers must decide who deserves to live and who will die. Isla , ruler of the Wildlings, is young but as determined as ever to break her realm's curse. However, lies have been spun all around her. In order to survive she must play the game and play it well, or her whole realm will cease to exist. I loved this book. I had low expectations starting it because I thought it was a huge jumble of a bunch of different books but it surprised me! It had all the politics and courts similar to ACOTAR but there was real strategy and political disputes. I loved all the magic but not everything was dependent on it. Isla could wield a sword and words that cut like a knife without the use of magic. Everyone has a secret, ulterior motives and past they would rather forget. The time has come to play the game, welcome to Lightlark.

Description

An instant #1 National Bestseller—soon to be a major motion picture. #BookTok phenomenon and award-winning author Alex Aster delivers readers a masterfully written, utterly gripping YA fantasy novel

Welcome to the Centennial.

Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The invitation is a summons—a call to embrace victory and ruin, baubles and blood. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Each ruler has something to hide. Each realm’s curse is uniquely wicked. To destroy the curses, one ruler must die.

Isla Crown is the young ruler of Wildling—a realm of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. They are feared and despised, and are counting on Isla to end their suffering by succeeding at the Centennial.

To survive, Isla must lie, cheat, and betray…even as love complicates everything.

Filled with secrets, deception, romance, and twists worthy of the darkest thrillers, Lightlark is a must-read for fans of legendary fantasy writers Marie Lu, Marissa Meyer, and Leigh Bardugo.
