I’ve heard this novel called “a love letter to reading” and I can’t describe it better than that! Take a journey to a small bookshop outside of Seoul run by a woman redefining her life. Not only will you learn about her and her array of customers, but you will also learn a new perspective on what a “successful” life looks like. It’s not all about how much money you earn or how high you can climb in your career, it’s also about the happiness you find for yourself and for others. Books play a huge role in helping these characters better understand themselves and the world around them, inspiring the reader to pick up the very real titles described in this story! I adored this read with all my heart and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys low-stakes, slice-of-life fiction about community and self-love!

Burnt out and drained, Yeongju fulfills her dreams of surrounding herself in stories and opening a bookshop. What starts off as a tidy, uplifting story of joy and redemption transforms into a choose-your-own-adventure of levity for readers.

The Korean smash hit available for the first time in English, a slice-of-life novel for readers of Matt Haig's The Midnight Library and Gabrielle Zevin's The Storied Life of AJ Fikry.

Yeongju is burned out. She did everything she was supposed to: go to school, marry a decent man, get a respectable job. Then it all fell apart. In a leap of faith, Yeongju abandons her old life, quits her high-flying career, and follows her dream. She opens a bookshop. In a quaint neighborhood in Seoul, surrounded by books, Yeongju and her customers take refuge. From the lonely barista to the unhappily married coffee roaster—and the writer who sees something special in Yeongju—they all have disappointments in their past. The Hyunam-dong Bookshop becomes the place where they all learn how to truly live.

A heartwarming story about finding acceptance in your life and the healing power of books, Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is a gentle reminder that it’s never too late to scrap the plot and start again.

Praise for Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop: A Novel

“Already a run-away hit in its original Korean, this gentle, philosophical novel is a balm for book lovers, for the burnt-out, and for anyone seeking change or community. “What is perhaps most surprising about Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop is the way in which Hwang Bo-reum juxtaposes the coziness of a favorite bookstore with the creative and financial stress situated just below the surface. “Via her thoughts on literature, Yeongju gives voice to the author's message about the redemptive power of reading. Yeongju's definition of a good book could be a description of Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop itself: '[L]iterary novels with social commentary . . .
