Jude is what you might call a demigod, a minor deity, a semi-mythical figure walking in mortal flesh. His talent: a sense for lost things - keys, futures, people, etc. His powers were overloaded after Hurricane Katrina devastated his home city of New Orleans, and he’s spent the last several years trying to disappear into the shadows and cracks of the world, only letting his power out in small increments so he doesn’t go insane. All this changes when his former partner/mentee, a crass redhead named Regal, comes to collect him. She leads him to a card game of unusual consequence, attended by a number of higher deities including a figure named Dodge - New Orleans’ fortune god. What follows is a delusional quest to understand the true stakes of the game and what it means for Jude.

The experiences we encounter in our youth can burn in our soul for years. Best selling author of SPEAK, Laurie Halse Anderson, has finally “let the cat out of the emotion-filled bag” of her life! Writing in free verse,  Anderson shares the soulful feelings of her teenage sexual assault for the first time in public. It has been forever since she’s been stuck at 13 years old, judged to serve a life sentence for what HE did to her. BUT NO MORE!  Her voice of despair, anger, and finally hope, speaks in the voice of the teen who survived. This is a powerful read addressing so many of the issues that teens encounter. It is a book for “anyone with the courage to say #MeToo, whether aloud, online or  in your own heart.”

Magic, romance, adventures through europe chasing an elusive cult, The Red Scrolls of Magic has it all. Clare balances high tension with humor and romance in such a delightful way, so you’ll be on the edge of your seat one moment and laughing the next. But what I love the most about this novel is the growth of Chase and Magnus’s relationship. Watching them learn about each other and what a relationship can be is extremely sweet.

Heart Berries is art. Mailhot’s writing pulls you in as witness to her life. Her vulnerability in this memoir is captivating, in that she draws you in and holds your, forcing you see her life on her terms.  The way she writes makes me feel like she is telling me this story. It doesn’t feel like I am reading it alone, but like I am sitting with her.

When I saw this book I knew I’d give a copy to my grandchildren, so they could revel in the positive encouragement that Mister Rogers shares.

It serves as an “open door” to discuss a child’s worries/problems in a non-threatening, and actually fun way!

If you liked Love You Forever by Munsch, you will probably like this book! This book also goes through the relationship between a mother and son as her “little lamb” grows up, focusing on their hands. Fortunately, this one does not have such a sad ending as Munsch’s book. I really enjoyed the illustrations, and the easy rhyming scheme as well.

This fun picture book for kids shows many ways to positively express yourself, not only with words but also with  actions and creativity. The book shows how powerful your words and actions can be in the life of others. In a way, this book is sort of  the adult version of  THE 5 LOVE LANGUAGES,  but for kids. Step forth young children, and show the world who you are. Express yourself, and see what a difference you can make in this world!
