Book Review: Good Titles for Healthy Mind, Body and Soul
The Book of Joy brings two spiritual masters and moral leaders together for a week to share intimate stories about what they have witnessed and learned in their often difficult lives. A co-writer weaves their stories together, connecting their thoughts with the science of joy. The result is the inspirational book, which promotes peace of mind, even during the most difficult of times. It is truly your invitation to seek and find joy and happiness in this world. For me, this book was what I needed to support a healthy mind.
I was feeling a bit sluggish last winter when a customer came into the bookstore and enthusiastically told me about a book which she was convinced changed her life. This piqued my interest, so I looked further into this supposed life-changing experience. Later in the summer I decided to give it a serious try. “Whole 30: The 30 Day Guide to Total Health and Food Freedom” is the first book that really made sense for my body.
For many people, myself included, the relationship with food is an emotional one, giving reward or comfort. I did not want a food plan that would take off pounds (although it did), but I was looking for a healthier way to fuel my body. This is not a deprivation diet, but rather provides a different way of thinking about food and it works.
The reason for the 30 day part of this plan acknowledges that change takes time, and is not always perfect at first. As I changed my relationship with food I noticed that I had not felt this healthy for a long time. My hair grew thicker, my nails grew longer, I had a pep to my step and I was never hungry. If you want additional information about this food freedom read “Food Freedom Forever: Letting Go of Bad Habits, Guilt, and Anxiety Around Food.” If you are looking for daily inspiration and support, consider the “Whole 30 Day by Day.”
According to Oprah Winfrey, "We are spiritual beings having a human experience." Her new book The Wisdom of Sundays: Life-Changing Insights from Super Soul Conversations has been a source of "soul expanding" insight for me. In this book, Oprah shares meaningful portions of spiritual interviews from 200 hours of taped conversations with leaders, teachers and best-selling authors.
The book is divided into ten facets of spirituality, providing conversations with people such as Eckhart Tolle, Brene Brown, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Cheryl Strayed, Tracey Jackson and Pena Chodronb, to name a few. The inspirational text is accompanied by beautiful photographs, which cannot help but promote a healthy soul.
