Well, he's back at it with a cast of misfit kids coming together to overcome evil. Shades of Firestarter with all the thrilling and intense telekinesis these kids display, also a little reminiscent of The Body (which became the film Stand By Me). King delves into a covert government agency which is kidnapping children. Luke Ellis is the super intelligent young hero of this book who uses his smarts to save both himself and his friends in this page turner. Don't be daunted by the heft of the novel, it is a fast read. Don't want to give any spoilers but, as with most recent Stephen King books, he has his literary groove on and doesn't disappoint!

What is mental illness, how do we understand and treat it, and how could we be wrong? These are some of the questions Susannah Cahalan asks in The Great Pretender. Cahalan examines one of the most influential studies in the field of psychology. Six folks walked into psychiatric wards and had themselves checked in. Their challenge was to convince everyone that they were sane and to get out. Cahalan brings her masterful storytelling skills to this book. She weaves her own experiences with mental illness through history and sociology to make a truly riveting book. If you are interested in psychology, history, or are just looking for a good read this is the book for you.

West has penned another passionate take on today's political and social climate, following her memoir Shrill. She writes clearly and cleverly about current politics, social movements, and her own life. Not only is this book interesting, but it is also bluntly hilarious. The emotion she brings to the topics she covers is cathartic, making for a satisfying read.

On an island in the near-middle of the sea is a covenant, one that Margarate has lived on for most of her life. One day, the ship that usually brings in a year's supplies brings a new person to the island as well. Queen of the Sea is breath-taking. The art is as fluid as the story telling. I loved this book, and highly recommend it to kids and adults alike.

Elizabeth Strout has "gifted" her readers with twelve stories, each one connected to her "live-out-loud" and funky 70-year-old character, Olive Kitteridge! Each story revolves around a topic that causes one to reflect on this thing called life; aging, losing a partner, grown children, grown siblings (and rivalry). Strout has the literary gift of approaching difficult, but real, subjects with humor and heart. This novel is delightful, simply delightful! I couldn't help but to grow to love Olive Kitteridge, one fine, quirky but down to earth woman!

The Dutch House: A Novel Cover Image

Published: Harper - September 24th, 2019

After Danny and Maeve's father dies, their "rug of wealth" is pulled out from under them. Maeve, just out of college, and Dany, about to graduate high school, are left to fend for themselves, as their "cold, gold-digger stepmother" evicts them from their home, the magnificent Dutch House. The Dutch House, which was symbolic of a lost life of entitlement, was the same house that caused a mother to abandon her children. This complex story shows how the influence of past memories impact the future. Author Patchett eloquently reminds us that letting go of the past is easier said than done!

Can a work of art change the world? Can literature be used as an international weapon? This novel, inspired by a true story that occured during the tension of the Cold War between the US and USSR, might just answer this question! At the heart of the story is Pasternak's book Dr. Zhivago. A CIA operative which used women spies, taken from a secretary pool, to smuggle the manuscript of this book out of the USSR (where it was banned from publication). Once on European soil, the manuscript could be published, then smuggled BACK into the hands of Soviet citizens, and wait for it to implode! I learned so much about the Cold War from this story of intrigue, mystery, bravery and power! Now I want to read Dr. Zhivago!

Although he knows deep in his soul that he's gay, he has no one with which to share his confusion and feelings. He is truly alone in this! Saeed understands that "being a black man can get you killed, being gay can get you killed, being a black, gay man is a death wish!" The honesty of this memoir leaves the reader with a sense of understanding and compassion for those trying to navigate an alternative lifestyle in our current, judgmental world.

If you've followed my staff picks, you'll know I'm a big fan of potty humor, specifically farts. This book starts by explaining how and why your body produces gas in an easy-to-digest way (pun intended). It then explores which animals fart and why - some animals do not fart! Also, some farts are deadly! A humorous pick, even for adults!

This is your classic Pride and Prejudice story, except this one is steamier and involves a smart, no-nonsense suffragette and the Duke she hopes to win over to her cause. Annabelle Archer has received a scholarship to study at Oxford, but her scholarship is dependent on her participation in amending the Married Women's Property Act and furthering the cause of the suffragettes. One man she must win over is the influencial Duke of Montgomery, a famously cold individual with the ear of the Queen. Once their paths cross, though, there is no turning back - for either of them.

The two clans are performers; the Palomas don colorful mermaid tails and swim through various rivers and lakes; the Corbeaus fashion wings for themselves and scale the trees, performing elaborate acrobatics between the branches. After a terrible chemical accident descends upon the town they are both camped in, Lace is cast out of her family and forced to seek refuge with the Corbeaus, who have no idea about her true identity. As she and Cluck, the black sheep of the Corbeaus, fall in together, the two will discover that the secrets between their families run deeper than they thought.

Sulwe is not only a touching and lovely story of acceptance for oneself and others, but also a genuinely gorgeous vidual odyssey. Sulwe is a little girl who has skin as dark as the night. She is darker than anyone in her family and all of her classmates, who tease her for her skin. One night after praying for skin as light as the golden sun, Sulwe is visited by a shooting star who tells her the story of the sisters Night and Day, and how they love each other and need each other despite of, and because of, their differences. Sulwe also gets advice from her Mom, who tells her that beauty comes from who you are and how you treat other people and yourself. I love any story that promotes acceptance and love, and the fact that this story is so beautifully illustrated is the cherry on top of the cake.

High Stakes (A Knight and Devlin Thriller #6) Cover Image
$26.95

Published: Oceanview Publishing - October 1st, 2019

High Stakes is the perfect mystery read for the autumn! While technically the sixth in a series, this novel works just as fine as a stand alone. Michael Knight is our intrepid lawyer hero, who is gifted a stay at a high end resort in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania after winning a particularly difficult case. While there, he is asked to pick up a mysterious object, which turns out to be an authentic Stradivarius violin, which would be special enough in and of itself. However, this violin turns out to be an especially hot commodity, when it is revealed that it holds the key to uncovering the lost treasure of Vlad Tepes - the 15th century prince we know as Dracula. Michael now has to play a very delicate game, balancing negotiations between the Russian mob, the Chinese tong, and the Romanian street gangs who are all vying for possession of one very special violin. I am a huge fan of any story set in eastern Europe, and especially Romanian Dracula stories, which are perfect for this season! If you like this, you should also read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.
