Thomas Mann. The world knows who he is; a brilliant writer who won the Nobel Prize in literature, and an influential voice during the dark days of WWII Germany. Colm Toibin takes the reader through the turbulent backdrop of Mann’s life, but also probes into the personal life of his family as well as the many facets of the private mind of this ingenious man. What is it that makes a man? What influences make you who you are? This intriguing story, backed by journalistic research, is every bit as good as Toibin’s last book, The Gentleman in Moscow.

I went looking for a super quick audiobook to listen to as a palate cleanser between books, and that’s when I stumbled upon The Furthest Station. What I didn’t expect to find was such an absolutely hilarious and brilliantly written silly urban fantasy tale. This novella was a total blast to listen to - and is just a side story in a hugely prolific novel series following the same character! I had never heard of The Rivers of London series, and now am extremely excited to delve into it!

If you enjoyed Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, or David Mitchell’s Slade House, you may enjoy this book. Do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

When I noticed that Heather Morris had yet another book connected to The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Cilka’s Journey, I just had to read it. I must admit that I’ve “had my fill” of WWII stories, but this one caught my eye because I know how personal Morris tells her stories. True to Morris form, she interviewed one of the sisters who, at the age of 93, now resides in Israel, and from here this true story is told. This journey begins with three teenage sisters from Slovakia, who are living without a care in the world, innocent of the harsh realities outside their home. They promise their dying father that they will always care for each other. Shortly after their father’s death, two of the girls are sent to Auschwitz, and the third sister joins them after two years. It’s that pledge they made to their father, which gives them the determination and hope to not only survive but thrive. The promise keeps them together after they move to Israel, get married and have children of their own. This story is a testament to the power of love! You must read it!

Robin Blyth is in over his head at this new weird magical liaison job he was shoved into, and now he’s cursed to boot. Edwin Courcey is trying to figure out what happened to Robin’s predecessor and remove the curse. They’ve both got a lot going on and the growing attraction between them is really not helping.

As the reader travels through the life of Italian Marco Carrera throughout the 60’s/70’s, you will experience the ups and downs life has to offer and will be amazed at Marco’s ability to ride the waves of change in this world. So steady is Marco, that he is referred to as “the hummingbird.” Throughout the story, Marco asks himself “Why me?” It takes him to the final moments of his life to find that answer, and it appears to make sense; he has felt all life has offered him, joy, pain, love, loss. Now, he can choose to die in peace, with the understanding that after all, his life was lived exactly on purpose. This brilliant novel almost feels like a therapy session on the edifice of life! If you’re looking for self-reflection, this novel will deliver!

Enemies-to-lovers gets the royal treatment (or should I say presidential treatment?) in this absurdly fun romance. First son of the United States Alex Claremont-Diaz has a longstanding rivalry with the handsome and aloof Prince Henry of England. Henry seems to be everything Alex is not - posh, reserved, the picture of traditionalism. Alex on the other hand takes pride in breaking the mold - he’s the first son of a female president, of Mexican heritage, whose parents divorced to pursue their own separate careers in politics. When a public and international snafu forces Alex and Henry to pretend to be best-friends, the pair quickly find that they have more in common than they thought. Will the threat of international scandal and duty to family tear the two apart?

I tore through this book practically in one sitting, and I’m sure you will too!

This novel examines the impact an oil boom can have on a small town. What at first might appear to be a golden opportunity for a community turns into a nightmare! Eleanor returns to her state of North Dakota as a journalist, assigned to write a feature article about her small, conservative town being taken over by the oil industry and the “roughnecks” who come to work. Her once slowly dying town is unprepared, physically and emotionally, for the “diversity bomb” that has exploded on her community. The struggles are even more pronounced for the women left to live in this male-dominated industry; harassment, violence, racism, misogyny.

This story is set within the backdrop of the Covid Pandemic, and I was reluctant to read it, yet I know Picoult’s stories are always filled with insights, so I gave it a try. Wow! I wasn’t expecting what unfolds in this story, and I don’t want to spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that I learned new, and disturbing information about those people who survive ventilation. This story illustrates the power of resilience and adaptability, and causes one to question reality; does one merely choose to believe a certain reality because it makes us feel in control? This story will surprise you, and challenge your thinking!

A Heian-era mansion, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride, its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company, and a group of thrill-seeking friends finds themselves together for a macabre vacation. This horrifying and amazing book is the best fix for a horror addict. If you’re looking for something a little spookier than Stephen King for your creepy month, this is it! I’m a huge horror fan and dislike vague horror, and this book scratched the spooky itch! The beautifully gory prose creates a dark atmosphere until the action really starts. I would recommend having a computer nearby to search for some Japanese words, especially the dark images of ohaguro bettari.

Lisa Jewell has never disappointed me, but I must say, I think her latest novel is the most intriguing and suspenseful one yet! The mystery is centered around a young couple, not married but sharing a child, who disappear after attending a party together, leaving their baby behind. The couple is a blend of an extremely passive woman and a fiercely dominating man, which you would think could give clues about their disappearance. But, think again! This novel put me on edge, and the twists kept me there until the bitter end! I dare you to solve it before page 400!

Hundreds of years ago there were three parallel worlds that coexisted peacefully together. Then one day the worlds were forced to be sealed off from each other.  Now Prince Maxim wants to remove the seal that separates him. Not liking that idea his father sends him away to the Blood Coast to learn how to be a proper prince. From that point things only get wilder.

I’ve always been a fan of V.E Schwab, but this one went above and beyond my expectations.
