This is another beautiful story by Heather Morris. She does a wonderful job bringing World War II stories to light without them being too graphic and sad. While you should read the 'Tattooist of Auschwitz,' you don't have to have read it to enjoy 'Cilka's Journey.' This is Cilka's story and her overwhelming desire to live and do what it takes to help others before she helps herself. Each story that is coming out about these harrowing acts of kindness and humanity towards others during such a horrible time in history deserves their own recognition and moment in time. It never ceases to amaze me of how strong the human spirit is, especially when faced with such difficult choices of something or death. Cilka was one of these people.

When you come from a family that is all magical and your magic never really works right, you may have what Nory has and it is called upside-down magic. But she comes to find out that she is not alone. This is the first super fun book in the 'Upside-Down Magic' series. I really love these characters, especially Nory and how she has to learn that it is okay to be different and to be able to accept not only herself but the differences in others as well.

There is so much more to tell about the 'Land of Stories' characters. This is how they came to be. I love Colfer's writing style and his ability to bring such a wonderful world to life. His characters are so full of life and personality. You do not need to have read the 'Land of Stories' to read this, but you should because they are so wonderful.

This publisher was super excited about this book and really pushing for it, for good reason. It's a complex mystery and thriller. After artist Alicia is found next to her murdered husband, she goes silent and is subsequently convicted of his murder. But did she do it? This book is layered with Greek mythology references and suspensful psychological thrills! This is a page turner worth the buzz!

Ijon Titchy was having a fine time in his spaceship alone, until he gets stuck in a time loop. His past and future selves start appearing and they are all uncooperative. What follows is a beautiful time-y mess. This graphic novel is trippy, funny and a great introduction to science fiction.

This is the perfect book to curl up with in front of a fire in October. It's got magic, it's got love, it's got that fall feeling (you know, a little lasy, a little chilly, and effortlessly beautiful). Tam and Nova were friends, way back when Tam lived in the same town. Now they are back and trying to figure out why there is a demon horse in the woods. I really enjoyed the characters in this book. They are written and drawn in a way that pulls you in and makes you care.

Published: Harper Paperbacks - September 4th, 2018

This is a love story between two ordinary people who survived the Holocaust as prisoners at Auschwitz. Their crime was being born Jewish. During their three years at Auschwitz they were deprived of their freedom, dignity and identity. As hard as it seems, they decided that the way for them to survive was to make the choice to participate in the destruction of their own people. This novel is a heart-wrenching account, given by Lale the tattooist, 60 years after enduring this horrific experience. The author interviewed Lale's story over the course of three years during which they became close friends. It is a beautiful love story within the parameters of devastation!

Ruta Sepetys, author of 'Between Shades of Gray' and 'Salt to the Sea,' has once again given her readers a birds' eye view of a difficult time in history. 'The Fountain of Silence' takes the reader into a dark part of Spanish history, exposing the secrets, scandals, oppression and lack of choice Spaniards endured under the Fascist regime of Dictator Francisco Franco. Between 1939 and late 1980's, over 300,000 babies were stolen from poor birth parents and sold into adoption, to be raised as good Francoists. This captivating love story taught me so much about this time in history that I never knew, nor could have imagined!

If you enjoy this book, keep your eyes open for Isabel Allende's new novel, available in January 2020, 'A Long Petal of the Sea,' which provides deeper detail about the Spanish Civil War.

The third installment of the 'Fever Crumb' series, prequel to the hit 'Mortal Engines' series, sees a return to the fast-paced wortld we've come to love. In 'Scrivener's Moon,' Phillip Reeve not only dives deeper into the history and lore of his world, but also spends more time developing his characters. If there is one fault with the 'Fever Crumb' series, it's the lack of development which was so rich in the 'Mortal Engines' series. Thankfully, however, this book is Phillip Reeve back to his best; it's fast-paced and in depth, full of back-stabbing and intrigue. Perfect for any fan of adventure.

Frank Li, a highschool upper-classman, grapples with his identity as a Korean American, and all of the expectations the world has for him. His Korean language abilities are laughable, but he still doesn't quite feel as American as he wished he was. His traditional parents, attempting to live the American dream, wanting him to marry a nice Korean girl; he does not want to be disowned like his sister who married a black man, but the heart wants what the heart wants! This novel is a coming-of-age adventure for a boy who, in some ways, is forced to deal with some very adult topics like racism, classism, cultural assimilation, and loss of a loved one. I related to this story growing up, unsure what parts of myself I could show to certain audiences. I cried a few time. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

'Tinfoil Butterfly' hits all the sweet spots for me - an incredibly disturbing exploration of the nature of evil and the futility of running from your own past transgressions. The story takes place where I grew up, the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota, which adds its own haunting element to this tale of horror. You might not understand everything that goes on in these pages, but you will feel it deeply.

This book is unlike any book you've ever read. It's horrifying, it's hilarious, it's disturbing, OH MY GOD IT'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!! A psychoactive compound known as "soy sauce" completely upends the life of our intrepid hero, David, and his friend's lives in ways both gruesome and gut-busting. Lovecraftian monsters appear where none were before, but are they a product of a wild hallucination via soy sauce or a real threat on a mission to devour their small town?! To be honest, I still don't know. And that might be the best part about this crazy book.

This book starts right off with a mixture of quotes, newspaper headlines, maps, and daring photographs from the 1950's through the 1980's. It details the Vietnam War as well as other life-altering events happening during these times from the first satellite phone call to the first moon landing to M.L.K.'s assassination. It will have you in tears, appreciation and heartache all at the same time. Breaking up the almost journalistic expression of this book is beautiful prose that will take you back to another time full of wonder as well as destruction. This is a must read, especially for those who were not around to experience these things firsthand. This is truly your chance to fully see and feel what was happening during these years.

Tolkien began to form this wonderful piece of literature in an army barracks on the back of a sheet of military marching music during the First World War. His son, at 94 years old, gave a beautiful ending to the era that was J.R.R. Tolkien by getting this work published. This story follows the journeys of Tuor who is guided by Ulmo Lord of Waters. The great villain of this story is the Lord Melko. Gondothlim were kin of the Noldoli whom escaped Melko's power when, at the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, he slew and enslaved their folk. Follow Tuor on his quest to join forces towards a higher cause and smite down Melko and all that he is. This story has all of your favorite Tolkien folklore, battles, and adventures. It has proven to be a wonderful ending for one of the most adored authors in history. Besides, who doesn't want to read about Balrogs riding dragons into battle?!

An amazing little book for all ages that helps to put this country into a little bit more close perspective and understanding. In a time where there is cultural strife within our own borders and without, this is a great reminder of how this country was formed and what it was supposed to be. Despite whatever your belief is on foreign policy and immigration, this serves as a chance to really reflect on what it all means, what an immigrant is, and focuses on the people who are immigrants in our country in powerful positions (political or artistic) whom we look up to, admire, and rely on. An eye-opening book which I think everyone should at least pick up and browse through.

Published: William Morrow - September 3rd, 2019

'After the Flood' is an eloquent and timely dystopian novel that contends with the moral aftereffects of the apocalypse. Set immediately after flood waters engulf everything but mountain peaks, where adults remember the world as it was, but children are raised on boats and rarely see land, the main character Myra sets off to find Row, the daughter stolen from her when the waters first encroached. Setting off across a drowned North America, Myra, her other daughter Pearl, and the mysterious Daniel must wrestle with their sense of right and wrong in the face of the unknown. The question asked in this novel is this - under extreme circumstances, is it right to risk what you have for the hope of attaining what you once had? What, and who, are we all responsible for?
