Littleport, Maine is your typical resort town. Visitors come for the beauty of the beach, mountains, and the idyllic little town. But like most "perfect" towns, this one is full of secrets and unrest. The locals versus the wealthy that come in building giant homes along the coast leads to underlying tension. Tragically, one of the wealthy families loses a daughter to alleged suicide. Nothing is as it seems and everyone is suspect. A fast paced thriller that will have you looking at resort towns a little differently in the end.

This small book packs a powerful punch. Phillips is a brilliant, interesting writer, weaving a story that you can't put down. The story follows Molly, a paleobotanist and mother of two young children. Phillips deftly puts the reader into the brutal, beautiful world of motherhood. This really is a book about motherhood and the primal need between mother and child. This is also a little sci-fi, thriller and mystery. After reading this book, I am still digesting and thinking about it three weeks later!

Aderyn is an ax-toting, dirt-stained, and home-loving gravedigger. She has a fairly mundane life digging graves to support her family and occasionally chopping down a reanimated corpse called bone houses. But lately, the bone houses have been popping up more often than usual. Along with a mysterious mapmaker who rolled into town, Aderyn ventures into the magic woods to figure out why.

This book is a fairy-tale like story with all the ax-weilding and grave digging of a medieval action movie. I really enjoyed it. This book also features a reanimated goat who protects the protagonists, if that doesn't get you interested, I don't know what will!

Harleen is living in the poorest part of Gotham with a family made up of drag performers and social activists, so she's pretty darn happy. That is until her family's home and performance venues are threatened by gentrifying forces. So, Harleen does what she does best and starts to mess with the status quo.

Breaking Glass is my favorite iteration of Harley Quinn's origin story because it focuses on her experience and personality, as opposed to the Joker. This is a fun and lovely comic.

Iris is fifteen years old and pregnant. She is too young to understand that one the other side of pregnancy is Motherhood. All she wants is to raise a child that her parents couldn't try to control! Woodson, author of 'Another Brooklyn', explores the ways an unplanned pregnancy changes two families, especially families from different social classes. Moving back and forth in time, Woodson reflects on the strained relationship between the parents, grandparents and the illegitimate child herself. Themes of mother-daughter relationships, teenage pregnancy, ambition, fatherhood, and sexual identity are explored in this powerful, beautiful work of literature!

This story left me with a deep sense of sorrow that I just can't shake! What a refugee must endure to leave their beloved country behind after witnessing horrendous acts of violence is difficult to comprehend. Those refugees who are fortunate enough to afford it can be smuggled into other countries, but their problems do not stop there. They've left behind their home, their dreams, their culture, and their family. The peaceful beekeeper from Syria endures this refugee nightmare and can find no comparison between bees and humanity. It appears that bees have a better sense of a greater good.

The author wrote this novel from all the stories she experienced while working in a refugee center in Greece. The story provides a much-needed look at refugees who are trapped in their own hell!

He doesn't realize that throughout this murder trial he will confront a deranged, highly intelligent, cold-blooded serial killer ... who is on the jury for the murder he committed. The story moves fast and twists through each chapter, keeping the reader on edge! As I read the story, my own childhood fears of the bogeyman in the dark and the moster in the closet hit me full force! Although this isn't my preferred genre, I'm happy that I didn't let this complicated puzzle of a story pass me by.

Author Sesay is a CNN correspondent responsible for news coming from Africa. She led the team that covered the story of the 276 Nigerian schoolgirls who were abducted and held captive by the Boko Haram Islamic militant group. This story was personal to Sesay, and she was determined to keep it alive, despite the Nigerian government's attempt to downplay and even deny this ever happened. Sesay's journalistic style is strong, providing facts and background to the nightmare that occured in Northern Nigeria. She exposes the political context of the Nigerian government's failure to support these "lost girls". I would label Sesay as a strong champion for human rights!

Esther Hicks has been on camera her whole life. Six For Hicks is a knockout success reality show following the Hicks family, their home life, and Pastor Hicks' role in their megachurch. Every family has their secrets, though, and Essie is harboring one that threatens to break apart her family - forever. I found this book to be a great commentary on today's #metoo culture, the secrets we keep to protect the ones we love, and the cost of speaking the truth.

Ask any woman who's had children and she'll probably have a few things to say about the division of labor when it comes to child-rearing. Lockman delves into a concept that plagues many a family but is often hard to put a finger on - some people call it "emotional labor," or the invisible labor that many (if not most) women are saddled with in their everyday lives. Has your husband or significant other ever told you, "I would've done it if you'd told me to!"? But why must the women by the ones to tell them so? Shouldn't what is obvious to us be obvious to them? Lockman helps work out the hidden biases and psychological mechanisms behind one of the most subtly infuriating aspects of any romantic relationship.

Leave it to author Salman Rushdie to keep you guessing! This book follows the story of Sam DuChamp, a writer and traveling salesman, who immortalizes himself to become who he needs to be to win the affections of a movie star he has fallen deeply in love with during his numerous hours glued to the television screen. He creates an imaginary son, Sancho, to go on the quest of true love with him. An interesting delve into how the stories we write so well reflect our own lives, struggles, and insecurities. Rushdie shows a character which we can both laugh with and at in the best way.

In Watermelon Sugar review.

As always, Brautigan is an incredibly superb storyteller! He weaves a curious tale that feels almost like a play combined with aloof poetry. The symbolism in the story is just as good even if you don't catch on right away. Short enough to read a few times in a row and you will always find something that you missed previously. In this story, he creates a fantastical world where everything is made of watermelon sugar, though not all is as sweet as you would imagine. Mixing talking lions, love, family, friends, and a gang of villains you can't help but want to understand better.

Brautigan is an absolute must-read for the exploration of writing styles. One of a kind.
